Among Taichung's longest-standing, most popular dining/nightlife spots, FM has upgraded to an ideal new location on the second floor of Mediterranean-style Le Free dining/shopping building along WenXin Road's busy Section 2. The Western-style menu still includes favorites like "The Oskars" (NT$350-400)--chicken, beer tenderloin or fish, stuffed with crab meat and asparagus; Bourbon BBQ Pork Ribs (NT$400/half rack, NT$750/full); and House Ground Burger (NT$300). Seafood offerings including Raw American Oysters (NT$500); steamed shrimp or clams; and Jumbo Fried Oysters. There are also salads and plenty of side dishes like garlic mashed potatoes or hand-cut fries. The bar's offerings remain extensive, with Boddington's, Hoegaarden, and Stella Artois beers on tap; dozens of well-made cocktails; and various Jagermeister and Red Bull based concoctions. A weekend all-you-can-eat brunch is being offered as before, as are regular parties, events and specials (check Compass Nightlife section). --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Naomi Lai
A. Long-time FM Chef Fred Harold is now selling steaks by weight, so that diners select the size of their cut and pay on that basis. This includes the pictured Filet Mignon (NT$3 per gram), New York Striploin, and Rib Eye (NT$2/gram).
B. FM's second-floor location includes plenty of pleasant outside, open-air space, where you can enjoy the evening breezes and big-city lights. More tables will be added as it gets warmer.
C. Despite the change of venue, the new FM's interior retains the white-stucco walls and arched doorways of the previous setting, with a sizable bar, various seating areas and private side room for gatherings of 15-20 people (by reservation).
