La Bodega:
Taichung's First Spanish Bar
By Ada Lin Translated by Cheryl
Robbins
|
 |
Taichung recently gained an interesting
nightlife option named La Bodega. This Spanish-style bar is located
behind the main branch of Sogo Department Store, at the corner of
JungMei (ChungMei) and MingYi streets above the Su Bau Cafe in what
used to be PJ's Cafe.

Here,
you can try a unique Spanish drink called Porron. This is made
from white wine, beer and lemon soda, and is poured into a special
bottle that has a long, curved spout. No glasses are necessary.
Just hold the bottle above your mouth, open wide and let the
Porron flow in. You've got to try this at least once. First-time
customers can ask the bartender to try Porron free of charge.
|
Other beverage options include a
large selection of red and white Spanish wines. For those new to
Spanish wine, the most popular is Rioja. Happy Hour is from 8 to
10 p.m., Monday to Thursday. During Happy Hour, order a glass of
Rioja red wine and receive a free order of tapas (Spanish snacks).
Also during that time, Torres red wine is NT$100 per glass and two
bottles of San Miguel beer are only NT$150. Thursday night is Ladies
Night, when ladies can buy all drinks two-for-one.
| Paella
(Spanish seafood dish) is only available Saturday evenings but
must be ordered in advance (Monday to Friday). The rest of the
food menu is quite simple and includes tapas, hot sandwiches,
Spanish omelettes and Spanish tomato bread with Parma ham. |

La Bodega is a great little place
to unwind after work. Enjoy some food, drink and good company
without all of the noise of most pubs. The owners' friendly
smiles and hospitality are sure to cheer you up after a hard
day's work.
