It was late in the evening and -- as frequently is the case --
I had not eaten dinner yet. Desperately looking for a small eatery
that was still open at this hour, I decided to head for Beiping
Road, not far from the Chungching Road Wellcome supermarket. There,
I saw a big lit sign which said "beef noodles" and immediately
stopped. Chungli Yung Chuan Beef Noodles, it turns out, already
has a reputation for great noodles and, just as good, is open until
midnight. I noticed that the other diners were slowly working their
way through their big steaming bowls, frequently pausing to sniffle
or wipe their noses. I soon discovered why, after ordering the "spicy"
("la") version of noodles. The delicious broth is red
with pepper sauce. After I bought a cold can of iced tea from the
proprietor, she smiled and commented, "It's too spicy, isn't
it?"
"No, it's great!" I responded, smiling through burning
lips. And it was. In addition to NT$85 bowls of beef noodles (regular
or spicy), there are "jaotzus" or boiled dumplings, soup-less
noodles covered with vegetables and meat ("tza jiao mian")
and egg-drop soup ("tan hua tang"). Beyond a doubt, I'll
be back to enjoy this pleasant little place the next time I find
myself in the grips of late-night hunger pangs. To get there, cross
Chungching Rd. in front of Wellcome and continue down Beiping Rd.
about 200 meters. It's on the right.
