If you're looking for cheap, good-quality Chinese food any time of the day or night, this rather large "hole-in-the-wall" is the perfect spot.
As its name implies, this eatery's claim to fame is its tasty "tou chiang", or soy bean milk, which is served hot (NT$12) or cold (NT$18). Lai Lai is actually a chain of restaurants, which started back in Taipei in the 70s and quickly gained fame for its great drinks and food.
Just as good as the milk is the wide selection of Chinese dishes, primarily representing northern Chinese cuisine. A big hit are the leeks and shrimp steamed dumplings (jeng jao), which are served in eight-dumpling steamers for NT$64.
Fried dumplings (kuo tieh) are similarly good. Other treats include the palm-sized scallion oil cakes (tsung you ping), beef rolls, beef noodles (nio rou mian), pork and vegetable-filled buns and ginseng chicken soup. Nothing costs more than NT$80 and take-out is available. Lai Lai is located on the corner of Wenhsin and Hsitun roads.
