Black Cat Canteen

(04) 2665-2233
29, HePing St, Shalu Dist
Hours: 11-2 pm, 5-10pm (closed Mon)

This nostalgic restaurant next to Shalu Railway Station displays various Taiwanese knickknacks from the 50's. Besides its banquet meals and entrees, this eatery's interior decor also makes it ideal for photos and enjoyment of musical "oldies". Its proximity to Taichung Port allows fresh seafood to be conveniently delivered to the kitchen and transformed into reasonably-priced delicacies. Meals includes the Giant Seafood Hotpot, featuring daily-fresh seafood in a savory soup. Taro Duck (NT$150), dipped in ketchup, is crispy outside and soft inside, while Sesame Mushroom Buns (4 for NT$120) are stuffed with aromatic chopped mushrooms and creamy sesame paste. The Black Cat Simmered Duck (NT$800) includes tender meat in a broth mixed with tea oil and is wonderful with a bowl of rice. The smoked Nostalgic Style Tea Duck (NT$180), with its sweet and bitter tea flavors, is also recommended. After eating, customers can savor some Starfruit Juice (NT$60) in the vintage surroundings. --By Chloe Chang, translated by Anna Yang
