Gulu's House, already one of Taichung's top French dining spots for the past three years, has gotten even better with its recent move to a higher-visibility location near its old one. The key to Gulu's success is authentic, bistro-style cuisine, offered for extremely reasonable prices, with most entrees served with salad, drink and dessert. Besides popular a carte items like the NT$580 Cote D'Agneau Roti a la Moutarde et au Romarin (Roasted Rack of Lamb with mustard and rosemary), one can enjoy multi-course sets like the NT$800 Gulu's House Testing Menu, NT$1,200 French Classic Menu, or new NT$850 Two-Person Menu, all with various starter, soup, main course and dessert options. From 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. there is also a wide range of NT$180 Business Lunches with salad, French soup, drink and various main courses, from pasta to fresh and grilled baguette sandwiches. Also don't miss a trademark weekly Gulu's event--Tuesday crepe nights when, from 5 to 9:30 p.m., you can enjoy a variety of fresh-made crepes (NT$160-250) for a meal or dessert. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Naomi Lai
A. The new and improved Gulu's features an inviting, quaint-looking red facade that beckons diners into the cozy, romantic interior, decorated with light yellow walls, European photos and prints and other touches that give it a very Continental flair.
B. French Chef Gregory Le Cloarec, a native of Brittany, holds yet another one of his popular dishes, Hachis Parmentier (Shepherd Pie), a traditional French family dish consisting of layers of minced beef, mashed potatoes and cheese baked together.
C. Among the new menu items now available is the NT$280 Risotto de Champignons Parfume Aux Truffles Noires (Baked Mushroom & Truffle Risotto). Other additions include the Quiche Aux Legumes (French Veggie Cheese Tart), and the sinfully tasty Chocolate Fondant (NT$150)--chocolate syrup-filled chocolate cake served with ice cream.
