Hours: 5 pm-1 am (to 2 am Fri/Sat)

Beer connoisseurs looking to chill out away from the usual pub scene may want to check out this interesting place, which faces Tiger City mall's outdoor plaza. Most of the seating is at wooden tables outside, with indoor seats limited to a single short bar. As the big copper-colored vats behind the bar hint, Barley & Water offers craft-brew-style beers--a Golden Pils, Weissbier, and dark Dunkel--on tap, with a cold 500cc mug or glass costing a very reasonable NT$150. This place and its beer are part of Deluxe Beer's chain of three outlets (including Taipei and Kaohsiung). If beer's not your thing, you can also enjoy 500ml New Zealand Still or Sparkling Pure Water for the same price. There's also a small but respectable menu with entrees and snacks, including Buffalo Wings (NT$300), Potato Salad with Veal Sausage (NT$320), Sauteed Clams with pesto white wine sauce (NT$360), Nachos with salsa sauce (NT$90), and deep-fried onion rings or calamari (NT$120). --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Ann Lee
