If you are a fan of Japanese dining and like watching Japanese cooking shows on TV, you may have picked up that the art of authentic Japanese cuisine goes far beyond its taste and presentation. However, many of us might not be jumping on a plane for Tokyo anytime soon to sample Japanese delicacies. So, for us in Taichung, a little place called Li Lai Ju might just be our best bet.

This fine eatery, located in Xitun district near Taisuco and Tunghai University, has simple decor and potted plants scattered around the seating area, which holds about 80 people. Li Lai Ju is divided into sections to cater to the different dining preferences of their customers-some seats are close to the kitchen bar, some are separated for privacy, and some are set up right next to the wooden windows, so patrons can take a peek at the rice fields outside. Pale yellow lighting soothes the entire restaurant.

The owners of Li Lai Ju have both worked at 5-star hotels and know the importance of high standards and friendly, welcoming service. The Handmade Cold Oolong Noodles (NT$240) is a signature dish made by a professional Japanese chef who studied and practiced cooking in Japan. In addition, these noodles are made with Japanese flour and have a specific salt-to-water ratio, helping create a top-notch flavor. Also try the Fried Mozzarella Cheese Sticks; the owners discovered that the cheese manufactured by Tunghai's dairy has an outstanding, mild aroma, so the owners buy all of this locally made cheese from the university.
