Sahara Restaurant and Bar: An oasis for the hungry and thirsty

---By Matt Flint Translated by Ann Lee Photos By Sam Howard

52-2, JingCheng 3rd St.

Hours:5 pm-until late (opens 11 am Sat/Sun, closed Mondays)

It may be named after a desert but this place is definitely an oasis, where one can rendezvous with other hungry explorers and get replenished. Once a popular cafe on ZhongMing South Road, this restaurant found a new home and a following by expanding their menu and creating a truly international dining experience.

Among the many exotic dishes on the menu, you will discover treasures from around the world. The South African Boerewoers Special (NT$300) comes with one cheese samosa, chapati bread, rice and salad. Replace the sausage with chicken stew (Sahara Special, NT$300) or kebabs (BBQ platter, NT$300) and you have two more meals that are big enough to share. Point your compass towards Europe and try the Spanish Omelet (NT$200) or the Fish Fingers and Chips (NT$130); point it towards South America and try the Enchilada or Quesadilla (NT$200). Now take a trip to the Middle East for a Da-Da Burrito (NT$150), the dish that made Sahara a food lover's destination from the very beginning. Most dishes come with a side of crispy fries.

Groups of hungry hunters often reserve tables on the second floor to plan the next leg of their journey and fill up on food and drink, or even share a "Hookah" water pipe with some flavored tobacco. One of the newest additions to Sahara is the Beck's on tap, served fresh and cold. They also supply many types of beer (NT$100-150), red and white wine (NT$150), delicious milk shakes from different corners of the planet (NT$100) and international teas (NT$100).
Once you're nourished, hydrated and happy, you may want to grab some banana bread, apple pie or a brownie (all NT$80) for the trip ahead. Happy travels.
