THE EARLY BIRD DINER

--By Matt Flint, translated by Eva Huang

Taichung finally has an American-style diner with all-day breakfasts, "bottomless" cups of coffee and fountain drinks, plus a lunch menu with some surprises. The Early Bird Diner will no doubt become a favorite hang-out and community hub, thanks to its 15-foot bulletin board, open to anyone. If you are in a rush, you can call 10 minutes ahead and your food will be thrown to you from the front deck. Or saunter in, grab a seat and judge the culinary skills of the staff. To get started, you can order a Breakfast Sandwich (NT$79) and a side of seasoned home fries (NT$50). Try the Ramble Scramble, made with three eggs, three vegetables of your choice, home fries, toast, and juice (NT$199) with meat (+NT$20). Or you can get the Deuces Wild breakfast, with two eggs, two strips of bacon, two sausages, home fries, toast and juice (NT$222). This review would not be complete without mentioning the pancakes and french toast, both cooked to perfection with slightly crisp outsides and soft, fluffy innards. There are big plans for this business and all you have to do to be part of it is to swing by and have a great cup of coffee.
