This little pizzeria fills a unique niche that no one else does in Taichung--that of the traditional all-American neighborhood take-out/eat-in/delivery joint that sells pizza by the slice. This no-frills shop would not look out of place in a downtown Philadelphia or New York neighborhood, with its red-checked table coverings and big glass window, through which passers-by can see pizzas being made. According to the two restaurant-jaded owners--Patrick (formerly of Papa's Italian Restaurant) and Simon (formerly of Chubby's)--this effect is intentional. The low-priced, very tasty pizzas they produce are just as all-American and come in about 10 flavors. Unlike anywhere else, pizzas can be bought by the slice--a quarter of a big 16-inch pie, which costs NT$120 with a tea, NT$150 with a Coke or NT$180 with a beer. Medium 10-inch pizzas are also sold--from the NT$220 Cheese to NT$310 Papa's Super Supreme--with two mediums and a 1.25-liter Coke for NT$480. Papa's also offers about 14 hot/cold 10-inch submarine sandwiches (NT$125-160), salads and baked pasta, and plans to add burgers and pastas later. To get there, take MeiCun Road from TaichungGang Road, go through the first traffic light and turn right into the alley at the next 7-11. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Cara Steenstra
