Creative Restaurant is enjoying its eighth year in Taichung, serving a wide variety of European dishes and a multitude of teas. One would be hard-pressed to find this kind of variety and quality for these kinds of prices. Given Creative Restaurant's longevity, they have to be doing something right.
The decor is an eclectic blend of Italian bistro and art deco design, with a few stuffed animals thrown in for good measure. The large windows and exterior gardens give the place an open-air feel without taking away from its cozy, romantic atmosphere.
The menu at Creative Restaurant is a journey around the world. There is Australian Steak, German Pork, and Canadian Lobster, all priced around NT$320. While there are individual entrees, you can also order a number of set meals which include a trip to the salad bar, soup, entree, and a dessert, priced between NT$400 and NT$520 depending on which dishes are included. Portions are ample; a four-course meal will leave one bursting at the belt. The head chef used to work at the Gua Bing Restaurant in Kaohsiung, and his creations reflect his skill and experience.
What sets Creative Restaurant apart is its wide selection of drinks and its unique desserts. There are at least 44 different teas, coffees and juices, all priced around NT$170. From the standard milk tea to the more outlandish Purple Flower Love in the juice section, one can spend months experimenting with different tastes.
Creative Restaurant also has the unique distinction of being the only restaurant in the city that serves donuts, fried to perfection and served with a coating of sugar. A donut comes free with most set meals; ordered separately, they are NT$50 each. This signature dessert is a major attraction; the restaurant's name literally means "donut." Several other desserts include the equally rare pumpkin pie.
Located across from Little Italy, this eclectic eatery has the variety, the quality and the value for a fantastic dining experience.
