When it comes to dining spots, Taichung continues to produce pleasant little surprises here and there, waiting to be discovered. A fairly exotic example of this is Sahara Cafe, which has been satisfying a growing number of diners with its unique blend of reasonably-priced Eastern and Western cuisine.

Sahara's exotic image starts with its owner, Jan, who hails from Tajikistan but has lived in Taiwan for about 20 years. Previously running restaurants in Taipei and Kaohsiung, he and his wife decided they liked Taichung and moved here to set up shop. Their pleasant open-air place--a spacious, elevated wooden deck with outdoor tables and a roofed-over seating area--works great for Taichung's nice climate and is situated along Zhong Ming (Jung Ming) South Road about half-way between TaizhongGang (Taichung Kang) and Gong Yi roads.

Jan says his food is a mix of various influences, including Central Asian, Chinese and even Mexican. A long-time favorite is his invention, the chicken, beef or lamb Da-Da Burrito (NT$100/each, NT$170 set), a delicious treat that puts a slightly Indian/Middle Eastern twist on the Mexican dish. Another must-try is his barbecued beef, lamb or chicken shish kebab (NT$50/each, NT$180 set meal with 2 kebabs), as well as the Samosas (NT$70); be sure and ask for his Cheese Samosa, which is not on the menu.

Other good Eastern and Western selections include the Tomato Beef (NT$180 set meal), Spicy Chicken, Fried Rice with Salmon (NT$150 set meal), various Herb Soups (NT$90), and Beef Noodles (NT$90), which Jan claims are as good or better than any other local shop's. Another good non-menu item is Gratin Tomato Chicken with Rice. Spiciness of any dish can be adjusted to customer preference.

The drink menu includes NT$100 beers, NT$60 milk shakes and milk teas, and hot and iced coffees and teas. One good option for diners are Sahara's set meals--noted above--which come with rice or bread, extra sauce, salad, and drink (coffee, tea or juice).

Thanks to Jan and his creative cooking skills, it's easy to see why customers can't get enough of this friendly little dining oasis.
