A
taste of Tex-Mex at Chicago Chips
By Lance Cyr
Chicago Chips' warm, cozy atmosphere will
relax you as soon as you walk in. The smells of Tex-Mex cooking
coming from the kitchen are enough to make you hungry, but subtle
so you don't leave smelling like a fajita. The music is a combination
of reggae, upbeat country music (no lost girlfriends or pickup trucks)
and my favorite, the Spanish guitar.
Our
group started with some very tasty, reasonably-priced Margaritas
(NT$110), plus complimentary chips and homemade salsa, which
was fresh, tangy and not too spicy. We ordered the Chicken Fajitas
(NT$280), Chicken Quesadilla (NT$240) and the half rack of the
Hickory Smoked Ribs (NT$320). Two of us also got the Chili and
Mushroom Chowder soups (NT$95). The chili was great, with lots
of beef but not too spicy. The excellent mushroom soup was a
New England-style clam chowder with the clams swapped for mushrooms. |

The
fajitas had a large amount of chicken (requiring us to ask for more
tortillas) and came with plenty of salsa. However, the sour cream,
guacamole, and shredded cheddar cheese were minimal. The quesadilla
was great (it looks just like the picture on the menu) and was just
the right size, filling me up after the chili. As with the fajitas,
there was plenty of salsa but minimal other toppings.

The
highlight, though, was the half rack of ribs. These come with
the best fries I've had in Taiwan. The pork was tender and
the hickory BBQ sauce was great. The half rack was big enough,
so everyone got to try a rib and the person who ordered it
went home full. In the end, no one had room for dessert.
The
manager recommends the steak--citing it as 100-percent USA
beef--plus the BBQ ribs, chicken wings and fajitas. All of
the recipes come from Southwestern America. The staff is very
friendly and we received great service. We had a party of
four people, with two sharing the fajitas, and our bill was
just over NT$1,300. All this definitely makes Chicago Chips
the place to go for a hearty "Tex-Mex" meal and
great atmosphere. |
