Although
most of the eateries around Taichung First High School are somewhat
small, some of them are run by outstanding cooks. Yi Chung Stir
Fry is one such place. Its owner has cooked for the former president
of Taiwan and already has another restaurant, called Hsiao Shan
Hsi Kuan. Yi Chung Stir Fry caters to the student and low-budget
crowd. Fried rice and fried noodles are available for NT$50 per
order. The most popular and unique dish is the salted fish fried
rice. The fish is brought in from Kaohsiung and cut into thin slices.
Another popular item is the Cantonese-style fried rice. The menu
often changes to include dishes such as sweet-and-sour pork, kung
pao shrimp, teppanyaki beef, boiled cuttlefish, and fish and eggplant
(NT$80). Yi Chung is usually crowded for several reasons--low prices,
friendly service and good food. --By Rachel Chiou
