ABOUT TOWN, page 2:
Thanksgiving In Taichung:
Where to stuff yourself with turkey, pumpkin pie and other treats.

By Douglas Habecker

La Terrasse French Bistro (43, Ta Sheng St.; tel. 325-6982) will offer a sit-down dinner with soup, salad and the other additions for NT$650/person. The restaurant also offers take-away turkeys, costing NT$2,500 for a small bird (12-14 pounds), NT$2,800 for medium ones (16-18 pounds), and NT$3,200 for big ones (22-24 pounds). All come with stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce and two 8-inch pumpkin pies. Turkeys need a minimum four-day advance notice but earlier orders are preferable.

For those wanting to order roast turkeys, there are several tried-and-true options. The undisputed leader, in terms of annual turkey sales, is Sugar & Spice Bakery Cafe which sells hundreds of the birds to individuals, groups and companies. This year, it will be selling turkeys--NT$1,980 for a 10-pound bird plus an eight-inch pumpkin pie--for either Thanksgiving or Christmas between November 1 and December 31. These can be ordered from both of the bakery cafe's two stores: 125, Chungteh Road, section 2 (tel. 242-6066) or 588, Hsiang Shang Road, section 1 (tel. 320-5381).

Many of Taichung's hotels are also getting in on the act. At Grand Formosa Hotel (1049, Chien Hsing Road; tel. 328-8000), NT$2,000 turkey hampers are available from November 9 to December 25 at the 12th-floor Cake Box and 11th-floor Buffet Brasserie restaurant. The Landis Hotel (9, Taichung Kang, sec. 2; tel. 326-8008) is providing the opportunity to enjoy a great Thanksgiving meal--at home--thanks to a take-away feast prepared by Chef Chris Johnson which will including a 12-pound turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Orders can be made from November 1 on and may be picked up from between November 16 and 23.

Another well-known take-home roast turkey seller is Plaza International Hotel (431, Taya Road; tel. 295-6789). For those who want to cook their own birds, Morrison Academy (292-1171, ext. 401) high school seniors are selling frozen US turkeys, weighing 12 to 16 pounds, for NT$55 per pound. Orders may be placed immediately with the high school office and picked up about a week before Thanksgiving. Call high school secretary Cynthia Lim at 292-1171, ext. 401 for information.

With all of the above choices to select from, there is little excuse for not gobbling down a filling, delicious Thanksgiving celebration, whether you're an American or not. The Pilgrims would no doubt be very proud.
