If Taichung were a US state, it would
probably be Texas, where bigger is better and there's plenty of
big to be found. Big discos, big restaurants, big tea houses, big
cafes, big parks, big parking lots and, of course, very big department
stores. With the long-awaited opening of the island's biggest department
store last month, we decided it would be good time to focus on not
one, but three, of the island's biggest stores, all found in this
city. While each resident seems to have their favorite, all three
are worth checking out. Have a good time but be prepared to put
some extra mileage on those credit and cash cards.
In this month's COMPASS, be sure not to miss our 'About Town' preview
of Thanksgiving specials around the city, from dinners to ready-made,
take-out roast turkeys, all worth enjoying whether you're an American
or not. In other culinary features, beef noodles (a great way to
warm up on a cool fall day) are the focus of this month's 'Restaurant
Round-Up' while Victoria Augustine provides a review of a traditional
Taiwanese eatery.
On almost a daily basis, the COMPASS office gets telephone calls
from Chinese and foreign readers, wanting to know where they can
pick up the latest edition. To address that need, we will be providing
a regular sampling of magazine distribution points each month. Although
the COMPASS is free and available at a wide range of outlets, we
are also now offering annual subscriptions for those who want copies
sent directly to their residences or offices. Call our office for
subscriptions, or for more information about where the magazine
can be picked up.
Finally, as you begin thinking ahead to the Christmas and New Year
holidays, do not forget to pick up our December issue, where you
will be able to find plenty of information about celebrations and
other special events of the season. It's amazing how quickly a year
comes and goes, isn't it?
Sincerely,
Douglas Habecker
